How Long Artificial Turf Installation Actually Takes (North Georgia, 2026)
Stage-by-stage timing for a real north Georgia turf install, and the two things that most often add a day.
The honest schedule for a typical yard
A standard 800 to 1,200 square foot residential turf install in north Georgia runs 2 to 3 working days. That is the number worth planning around, and it assumes the crew can get equipment into the yard and the weather holds.
Day one is demolition and excavation: removing existing sod and digging out 3 to 4 inches of red clay. Day two is base — hauling in aggregate, grading it to fall away from the house, and compacting it in lifts. Day three is turf: rolling it out, letting it relax in the sun, cutting, seaming, nailing the perimeter, and brushing in infill.
Small yards under 500 square feet frequently finish in a single long day. Putting greens take longer than their size suggests because the base has to be shaped to hold a break, not just made flat.
The two things that add a day
Access is the first. A backyard reachable only through a 36 inch gate means every yard of spoil goes out by wheelbarrow and every yard of base comes in the same way. On a 1,000 square foot job that difference alone can add a full day of labor.
Water is the second. If excavation reveals that the yard's low point drains toward the house rather than away, drainage has to be corrected before base goes down. Discovering that on day one is normal in clay; it is also why a quote that includes no drainage allowance is a quote that has not looked at the yard.
Rain does not usually stop a turf install, but it stops compaction. Saturated clay will not compact to spec, and a base compacted wet will settle. A good crew will stop rather than build on it.
What you can do to keep it on schedule
Clear the yard before the crew arrives — furniture, planters, pet equipment, anything against the fence line. Mark irrigation heads and any low-voltage lighting runs you know about; hitting an unmarked line costs an hour and a repair.
If the yard is gated, confirm the gate width in advance and say so when the quote is written. And if you have dogs, plan for them to be off the yard for the full install and for about 24 hours after infill goes in.
Common questions
Can I walk on artificial turf right after installation?
Yes, essentially immediately. The one thing worth waiting on is heavy furniture placement until the infill has been brushed in and settled, which is usually the same day.
Does turf installation require me to be home?
Not for the whole job. It is worth being there at the start to confirm the layout and edges, and at the end to walk the finished yard before the crew leaves.
What happens if it rains mid-install?
Excavation and turf work continue in light rain. Compaction stops, because clay will not compact to spec when saturated, and a base built wet settles later.
